Tier 3: Transitioning

Coming into a sport as a rookie, surviving the ups and downs of a player’s life, and exiting play with a well-planned, good future to look forward to. That’s the nutshell version of successful transition through the stages of a professional athlete’s life. ARD offers coaching and expanded trainings for players, their families/significant others, and other team and league persons on both the psychology and the practicality of moving through these stages successfully.

Our transition coaching focuses on the following:

  1. Grounding the rookie
  2. Understanding they are separated from the life they have always known but not yet adjusted to the life they are beginning
  3. Identifying and dealing with sudden wealth and fame
  4. Mastering social and professional etiquette
  5. Evaluating whom to trust
  6. Mastering the characteristics, habits, and skills of a successful entrepreneur – regardless of which specific business may be involved
  7. Executive functioning to initiate, plan and organize, set goals, solve problems, regulate emotions, and monitor behavior – particularly within a leadership position
  8. Private tutoring in public speaking, media management, interpersonal communication, decision making, strategic thinking, cash flow management, and other areas where players are expected to be competent.
  9. Spouses and significant others getting knowledge and skills to help their mates through:
  • That 1st year
  • Being traded or not picked up
  • Career ending occurrences such as injury, domestic violence, criminal activity, or addiction
  • Letting their old life go without losing the core of who they are
